WFP ends Somali contractor deals

Financial Times

The World Food Programme said yesterday it was ending its relationship with three independent contractors in Somalia after a United Nations report alleged that up to half the food aid for the east African country was being diverted.

The Rome-based UN aid agency said it welcomed an independent inquiry into its Somali operations, where the three transport contractors named in the report were alleged to be involved in arms trading.

Josette Sheeran, WFP executive director, said aid operations were always vulnerable in conflict areas and many of the issues raised had been addressed.Harvey Morris, New York
