UN AGENCY WELCOMES INDEPENDENT PROBE INTO SOMALIA FOOD AID OPERATIONS

The World Food Programme announced that it will submit to an independent investigation into its operations in Somalia. A United Nations monitoring group reported their suspicion that aid is being diverted to criminal organizations, terrorist groups, and even UN workers.

“The integrity of our organization is paramount and we will be reviewing and investigating each and every issue raised by this report,” – said Josette Sheeran, the Rome-based agency’s Executive Director.

Mr. Sheeran added: “WFP stands ready to offer full cooperation with any independent inquiry into its work in Somalia.”

Being one of the most crime-ridden areas of the world and a dangerous place for aid workers Somalia has been a challenge for the UN World Food Programme and it is constantly revising operations in that country, even suspending service as a result of threats to its staff.

With millions in need of food and other humanitarian aid, the assistance by World Food Programme and other UN agencies is vital for the approximately 2.5 million hungry and desperate people in Somalia. The food and aid distribution system needs to be re-built as it is now appears to be controlled by corrupt distributors.

Submitting to independent investigation of the WFP program is the right step to prevent further corruption and ensuring the much needed aid in the nation overwhelmed with civil unrest and constant drought.
